Tomorrow I am speaking to the Henley Business School MBA class on entrepreneurship; can entrepreneurs be trained (groomed?) and what do you think would be most useful for them to hear?

there is no training manual, training is on the job and you're taught your lessons along the way and it's a very long road with no guarantees.......

Are leaders born or made? Familiar question with similar issues. The answer is some people are born with natural gifts that significantly enhance their chances of being a successful entrepreneur; other people work hard, are willing to learn from their mistakes and through determination and perseverance succeed; whereas others it’s a mix of the two often supported by life-time learning and self awareness (many have a number of failed enterprises they started behind them before they achieve significant success). However, there are usually the following common traits: focus and priority toward the goal, willingness to work hard (it’s not 9-5), determination to succeed, perseverance and self belief in what you are doing plus a skill (whether that is a ‘trade’ or getting the right people around you to work together). If entrepreneurship is “a process through which individuals identify opportunities, allocate resources, and create value” then with the right motivation, support and tenacity it is time we encouraged more to take a step of faith rather than direct Henley MBAs to seek safer ground for their financial future. So… that’s my piece Kevin – please let me know your thoughts and I’d love to see your presentation sometime!
