For two reasons I would hope that it is indeed at least 10-12% higher, 1 that's the extra that Scotland gets in Barnet consequentials and 2, the cost of educating children in very remote parts of Scotland is much higher. So to count as 'higher than England' the spend would need to be at least 15% higher, in my view.

This link https://www.theyworkforyou.com/sp/?id=2016-03-16.13.0 says in 2016
av per primary school pupil in Scotland was £4,814 and average revenue expenditure per secondary school pupil in Scotland was £6,790

Using IFS figs The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/education/2017/feb/27/schools-to-be-hit-with-first-real-time-funding-cuts-in-20-years say that in England on average £4,900 currently spent on each primary school pupil and £6,300 spent per secondary student

According to that comparison average spend per primary pupil is roughly the same across Sco and Eng. And spend on secondary pupils is only 8% higher in Sco than in Eng.

But in reality, if it costs £10k pa to send a child to primary school in places like Orkney, Central Belt children will be getting less than the £4800 figure Angela Constance quotes.

Edinburgh is currently spending £2,900 per primary pupil per annum. I've lost the link but I think a comparable city like Bristol is spending around £4k per child.

Very interested to hear what you think of this.Lauranoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1603438996450817644.post-9216675630904399612017-06-08T01:47:25.990-07:002017-06-08T01:47:25.990-07:00Kevin - you seem to provide a reasonably objective...Kevin - you seem to provide a reasonably objective overview of the state of affairs acknowledging where blame lies with the SNP and where it may lie elsewhere. I am no expert so will accept your observations at face value. Three questions though:

- Why encourage people to vote against the SNP because of your education analysis? What could a Tory, Labour or Lib Dem MP in Westminster do to improve Scottish educational matters?

- Secondly, I do find one of your observations a touch lazy when you say that Sturgeon/SNP have been in power for 10 years. Technically, would it not be more accurate to say that they have been the minority government for the majority of that time, i.e. dependent on other parties as well?

- And wasn't Sturgeon's "judge me" call something she said this term (i.e. 1 year in), not last term?
